In spite of the success that lasers have had in the steel rule die-making industry, large format CNC routers continue to make gains and to expand the capabilities of die shops. One of the factors that is supporting this growth is the availability of a new generation of cutting tools.  New grades of submicrograin carbide and tuned, proprietary coatings have enabled the fabrication of innovative cutter designs that offer superior cut quality and cutting speeds that, in some applications, actually exceed that of laser cutters.

Specifically tuned for high-speed cutting (100 - 140 in./min @ 40 KRPM) of maple and Baltic birch plywood, the kerf cutter produces precise, clean cuts with just the right amount of drag. These tools have a split personality. They spend most of the day cutting shapes out of plywood for cabinetry, shelving and steel-rule die boards. (Applications where splintering and fuzzing of the top, or bottom surface has to be minimized.)  The rest of the time, they are happily drilling precision registration holes in die boards and counter boards.
